Flutter appoints former Sun journalist Hawkes to reputation role – People moves

Flutter Entertainment has appointed Steve Hawkes, a former Deputy Political Editor of The Sun newspaper, as Director of Reputation and Public Relations in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Hawkes joins Flutter from BCW Global Communications Agency. At BCW Global Communications Agency, he was Senior Director and Head of Strategic Media for almost three years.

Prior to this, Hawkes was The Sun’s deputy political editor from December 2013 to October 2019, and was also the paper’s business editor from October 2008 to June 2013.

In between her two spells with The Sun, Hawkes spent some time as consumer affairs editor at The Daily Telegraph. Early in his career, he was a retail correspondent for The Times and deputy business editor for the Daily Mirror.

“Flutter operates some of the world’s most popular sports betting and gaming brands, including Betfair, Paddy Power and SkyBet, and is committed to leading the way in player protection and safer gambling. I can’t wait to get started,” Hawks said.

The appointment comes after it was announced last week that Conor Grant had stepped down as chief executive of Flutter’s UK and Ireland operations due to a “planned career break”.

Grant will resign later this year and will be replaced by former Booking.com CEO Ian Brown.
