The Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj) has become the first Brazilian state lottery to issue sports betting bids.
The five-year tender, won by São Paulo-based Rede Loto, will allow the operator to offer online sports betting in the country.
Roterji said the new bid was worth R$5 million (£819,520/€952,405/$1 million).
“Since I took over the management last July, it has had the objective of issuing accreditation notices for sports betting. said.
“We have been certified as our first company and are ready to start doing business in our country. We thank Governor Claudio Castro and President of the Civic Council Nicola Miccione for their unconditional support for believing in this project. .”
Roterge added that the approval should also encourage other stakeholders to register and obtain sports betting certification.
interim measures
The tender comes ahead of Brazil’s anticipated federal regulation of sports betting.
Last month, the Brazilian government launched interim measures against sports betting, marking the end of a 20-year waiting period in the country.
The interim measure was adopted by Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and signed by the Ministry of Finance, Planning, Administration, Health, Tourism and Sports.
The measure will be announced by the Brazilian government after being signed by President Lula and will be in force for an initial period of up to 60 days, with a further 60-day extension thereafter.
Key measures include a 16% tax on gross gaming revenues paid by licensed operators. A portion of this will be split between public health efforts and match-fixing efforts.
Players will be subject to income tax of 30% on their winnings, capped at 2,112 reais, and the Brazilian Ministry of Finance is responsible for regulating sports betting.
Betting is not permitted for persons under the age of 18, persons associated with sports organizations, including athletes, and employees of the bookmaker.
