Germany’s new gambling regulator has vowed to further develop its predecessor’s job after taking responsibility for the fight against the illegal gambling market.
Starting today (July 1st), Glücksspielbehörde (GGL) has replaced the Saxony-Anhalt State Administration as the body responsible for taking action on unlicensed cross-state activities and activities across Germany. ..
This organization was created by Germany’s Fourth State Treaty on Gambling, which came into force in July 2021.
Starting today, GGL will begin implementing strategies to combat illegal gambling through means such as IP and payment blocking, revealing details on how these will be used next week.

The GGL will have former and new employees from Saxony-Anhalt and will grow to about 110 employees by the beginning of 2023, when it will be fully responsible for all German gambling regulations.
Among their ranks are Nadja Wierzejewski, an experienced department head responsible for fighting illegal gambling and related advertising.
Benjamin Schwanke, Director, said: “Executive measures, such as stopping payments for illegal gambling offers on the Internet, are being used for the first time from a single source. This allows us to take more effective actions against our providers.
“By bundling resources, we can identify unwanted developments and illegal games and address them quickly in the future.”
The Fourth State Treaty on Gambling allows for the first time national online casino games, but there are some strict rules aimed at protecting players. These measures included € 1 per online slot spin stake limit.
Earlier this week, Saxony-Anhalt agencies announced that they had approved nine more virtual slot machine and poker licenses across Germany, in addition to the three permits already issued.
Saxony-Anhalt agencies also revealed that they have introduced 25 online operators to the public prosecutor’s office for violating German law since the treaty came into force.
The department has taken action as part of a broader campaign against illegal online gambling operators.
A total of 148 illegal gambling cases were investigated and 871 websites were checked. The agency also reviewed 90 illegal gambling ads.
