Italy’s online sports betting revenue dips in May, while casino holds steady – Finance

Italy’s gambling revenues fell from € 292.2 million in April to € 276.4 million in May, primarily due to the decline in online sports betting.

Online sports betting revenues continued to decline, falling below € 100 million for the first time since October 2021. This is compared to € 153.5 million in May 2021. This significant year-over-year decline was implemented in the retail sector last May, with more customers betting online.

However, retail sports betting also plummeted month-on-month after a stable period, dropping from € 83.5 million in April to € 66.4 million in May.

In contrast to bet numbers, casino revenue rose slightly from € 155.1 million to € 161.8. As a result, the product split of gambling revenues has shaken significantly from sports betting, accounting for only 35.3% of the May market, compared to 40.7% in April.

The decline in market share seen by GGR’s four largest online casino operators last month is almost stable. Snai maintained its market share of 7.3%, while Lottomatica and Sisal decreased by 0.1% to gain market share of 7.2% and 8.4%, respectively. Pokerstars got a little worse as its market share dropped to 8.5%, almost wiped out all the profits it had made when it rose to a high of 9.7% in recent months.

In sports betting, May was the month when individual companies gained significant market share. The biggest motivation for online-only sports betting was Planetwin365, which has a market share of 9.6% in April to 11.5% in May.

The last time we gained such a high market share must be traced back to November 2020, when it occupied 12.0% of the market. This increase has also increased our combined share of the online and retail sports betting markets.

This profit across planetWin365’s sports betting market outperforms Goldbet, but Goldbet holds a market share of 21.3% compared to 15.5% last month. This is the first time operators have crossed the 20.0% threshold since Bet365 in April 2020.

PokerStars seems to have lost momentum in May as market share in both poker cash games and tournament play fell. Tournament market share fell from 48.8% in April to 44.7%, and cash game share fell from 43.4% in April to 41.9%. At the same time, E-Play24 has made great strides in both tournament play and cash games, with a significant increase in May. Market share in tournament play revenue increased from 7.8% to 9.8%. In cash games, the market share increased from 9.6% in April to 12.5%, making it even more prominent.
