The Ontario Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) has fined Unibet, which is owned by Kindred Group, C$48,000 (£31,392 / €37,192 / US$37,051).
According to AGCO, between May 19 and 22 this year, Unibet allegedly posted or aired a wide range of gambling inducements promoting a “generous welcome offer.”
AGCO’s Internet Gaming Standards prohibit the widespread public advertising of bonuses or other gambling inducements, and such marketing may not be published on a licensed operator’s site or after obtaining player consent. is limited to direct advertising.
Unibet was found to have made this form of marketing widely available and was found to have violated standards, resulting in financial penalties.
Unibet reserves the right to appeal this decision to the Licensing Court of Appeals, a tribunal independent of AGCO and some of the Ontario courts.
AGCO Chief Executive Officer and Registrar Tom Mungham said:
“AGCO will continue to monitor the activities of these gaming sites to ensure they meet their obligations under Ontario’s Gaming Control Laws and Standards.”
Unibet was licensed to start online gambling in Ontario in March, and the Canadian province opened its legal market the following month.
