Dutch media giant Talpa is “investigating” a possible legal challenge to a broad advertising ban due to come into force in the Netherlands early next year.
The country has introduced a ban on “untargeted” advertising for games deemed “high risk”, including online gambling and casino games.
The ban will prevent businesses from advertising indoors or outdoors on television, radio, or in public spaces after January 1, 2023.
The ban has come under a lot of political pressure since online gambling started in the country last year, with many parliamentarians calling for strict limits on gambling advertising.
But in response to the ban, media conglomerate Tulpa may take legal action against the government.
A Talpa spokesperson told iGB that Talpa, which owns channels such as SBS6, Net5 and Veronica, is “investigating” potential legal challenges.
Broadcast advertising will be banned from the beginning of next year, but sports sponsorships will remain in place until early 2025 so clubs can find new sponsors.
Digital advertising, meanwhile, will be subject to new restrictions as part of the ban, requiring advertisers to prove that no one under the age of 24 can see their ads.
